Atomic Sets The Stage For The Black Parade

News Release

Lititz, Pa. - The East Coast alternative rock band, My Chemical Romance is parading across the nation with their 2007 Black Parade Tour, impressing fans with their dark urban set by Atomic Design, Inc. The band's Welcome to the Black Parade album serves as the theme for the tour - which depicts a dark, gothic cityscape - representing a celebration of both life and death.

The set design was a result of creative collaboration between the band's lead singer, Gerard Way, and Atomic Design's Tom McPhillips and Mike Rhoads. McPhillips states, "The band had a vision that was anti-technology and pro-theatrics. To meet this vision, we designed and fabricated a set that was dramatic and theatrical."

Atomic Design created two, 12-foot long, 6-foot wide, helium-filled blimps, which are painted to look like warships from World War II. Also among the designs are a gurney, which Way lies on as he enters the stage at the opening of the show; a Paris cityscape background of scenic flats and sculptural carved bits; a 9-foot wide by six-foot high one-handed clock that continually rotates to represent the passage of time; and a big star cloth, which is painterly and dark with big blotchy stars on a grungy sky. While dark was the theme of this design, lights, from lighting designer Ethan Weber, also played an intricate part in making The Black Parade a unique and intriguing set.

My Chemical Romance's concept album Welcome to the Black Parade continues to top the charts and their 2007 Black Parade Tour taking away the breath of audiences all over North America. The tour is expected to hit more than 50 U.S. cities.
